Listen to the Gun is inspired by the tumultuous historical context of events in 1968: the Olympics in Mexico City; the Tlatelolco Massacre, a student protest in Mexico City against the government’s violent oppression of widespread social unrest where dozens of civilians were killed and more than a thousand arrested by military police just 10 days before the opening of the Olympics; and the famous Black Power salute by African-American runners Tommie Smith and John Carlos during their medal ceremony at the Games, a symbol in support of Black civil rights struggles in the US and of solidarity and resistance against oppression around the globe.
