ABOUT THE PROJECT
This cabaret-style dance theater performance created in collaboration with Mission Neighborhood Health Clinic’s Hermanos de Luna y Sol, an HIV risk-reduction intervention program for Spanish-speaking Latinx individuals. Established in 1995, HLS offers peer social support and a safe, fun environment where participants can connect with others with similar experiences. The program is based on research by Dr. Rafael M. Diaz and emphasizes cultural pride, community building, and personal empowerment.
The work was an homage to the 1950s Golden Era of Mexican cinema and melodrama. It premiered at Dance Mission Theater in San Francisco, October 19-21, 2001.
Terciopelo was possible by the generous support of the California Arts Council/Multicultural Art Program, Dance Mission and generous individual supporters.
