Today we went to Meneadero, Ensenada. At the beginning of the search, the people in charge gave us instructions about the place and where to do rastreo. This time the soldiers were warning us to be careful because in this location, we could run into people who might be armed. I got chills when the commandante said that we might see some pobladores armed around the area and if that happened we should take precautions. We should be quiet and follow instructions, don’t get panicked, and let the National Guard deal with it.

We were divided into 3 groups, Casandra, one of the leaders of the brigada, suggested we decide specifically where each group was going. A few soldiers from the National Guard went first, then some volunteers started cleaning the undergrowth with machetes. Then the rest of us followed. We went to three abandoned houses. While going to the second one we were removing some construction materials, and saw snakes. Julio and Pedro and la Señora Lupe were the most fearless people to deal with the snakes. They decided to kill them because it would be safer for the rest of us. They killed three: two rattlesnakes, one big one and one small one (the most venomous), and one other one that I don’t know what kind it was. Another intense moment, besides the snakes was a sign on a wall of the second house that it said, “If a rat (a thief) comes inside this property, he will be exterminated. Signed, El Viejon. Later we found out through the local newspaper that El Viejon was one of the cartel leaders of that area. On the way back to our buses, Don Julio shared his story with me. He has been to the brigadas a few times. He is looking for his son who disappeared a few years ago on his way home from work. Today was a negative day — we did not find any missing people.

Hoy fuimos a Meneadero, Ensenada. Al comienzo de la búsqueda, la gente encargada de segurida nos dio instrucciones sobre el lugar y dónde realizar el rastreo. Esta vez los guardias de seguridad nos advirtieron que tuviéramos cuidado, que en ciertos lugares había personas que podrían estar armadas. Me dio escalofrío cuando el comandante dijo que podríamos ver a algunos pobladores armados por la zona y que si eso sucediera deberíamos tomar precauciones como callarnos y seguir las instrucciones, no entrar en pánico y dejar que la Guardia Nacional se encargue de ello.

Nos dividieron en 3 grupos y Casandra uno de los líderes de la brigada sugirio que fueramos a lugares especificos cada grupo. Comenzando con los soldados de la Guardia Nacional para ir primero, luego algunos voluntarios detras para limpiar la maleza con machetes y luego el resto de nostros. Fuimos a tres casas abandonadas. Mientras íbamos a la segunda, cuando estábamos limpiando algunos escombros vimos viboras. Julio y Pedro y la señora Lupe fueron las personas más valientes para lidiar con las serpientes, decidieron matarlas porque seriá más seguro para el resto de nosotros. Mataron a tres: dos serpientes cascabel, una grande y una pequeña (la más venenosa) la otra no sé de qué tipo era.

Otro momento intenso además de las serpientes fue un letrero en un muro de la segunda casa que decía, “si una rata (un ladrón) entra a esta propiedad, será exterminada atención El Viejón. Posteriormente nos enteramos a través del periódico local que el Viejón era uno de los líderes del cartel de esa zona. En el camino volviendo a nuestros buses, Don Julio estaba compartiendo conmigo su historia, ha estado en las brigadas un par de veces, está buscando a su hijo, desapareció hace unos años volviendo a casa del trabajo. Hoy fue un día negativo, no encontramos personas desaparecidas.

私たちは3つのグループに分けられた。リーダーの一人のカサンドラが、各グループがどこを探すか、具体的に決めようと提案した。国家警備隊の軍人数名が先に出発し、それからボランティアがマチェーテ（なた）を使って下草を刈り始めた。彼らに続いて私たちは進み始めた。三軒の廃墟に行った。2軒目に行く途中、工事の廃材を退かしていると、ヘビが出た。フリオとペドロとセニョーラ・ルペは、なんの恐れも見せずヘビの処理をした。皆の安全のため、彼らはヘビを殺すことにした。三匹殺した。大きいガラガラヘビと小さい（一番毒性の強い）ガラガラヘビの二匹と、種類がわからなかったのを一匹。

ヘビ以外にも、緊張感が漂った理由は、2軒目の家の壁には次のような注意書きがあったからだ：「この家に侵入するネズミ（泥棒）は排除する」。下には「エル・ビエホン」と署名されていた。後日、地元の新聞で知ったが、エル・ビエホンはこの地域のカルテルのリーダーの一人だった。帰りのバスに向かう途中で、ドン・フリオは私に過去の話を打ち明けてくれた。彼は何度かブリガーダに参加している。彼は、数年前に仕事の帰りに突然失踪した息子を探している。今日は残念な日だった。誰一人失踪者を見つけることはできなかった
