Today were in Sierra Juarez, two hours inland from Ensenada City. There is a Native American reservation, Kutap Kuhtey. La Maestra Teresa, is one of the leaders of Siguiendo Tus Pasos, Familias Buscando Desaparecidos (Ensenada), was giving us indications where to search. She is looking for her son’s remains. He was disappeared in this area, 7-1/2 years ago. La maestra added, “So let’s put some attention to the inside of bushes. Some animals might have brought [his remains] there.” We marked a straight line, spread out twenty feet apart in a flat grassy area. We walked about three miles, like brushing the area with a comb. Then we went to other small areas. There were lots of animal bones, but not the ones we were looking for.
Doña Lupita was encouraging us to search deeply. La maestra has been a force of solidarity and organization in the Brigadas. Another compañera Yotzi, told me, “I want to find some bones for la maestra, to bring her some closure.” While I was walking in the line formation, I was praying for la maestra, but not for the remains. The prayer was for all of us be present and walk her pain so that, somehow, the pain will be lessened for her.
