A “Positive” Day

Today was a busy day, a “positive day,” which doesn’t mean that it was an easy-going and friendly day. A “positive day” means that we found one dead body and possibly more. We went back to the previous site, El Morro, near Rosarito, 45 miles from Tijuana City. Before going to El Morro (a cliff used as a garbage dump) we stopped at two sites nearby. At the first site, we were looking for a young man in his 20s. He disappeared five days ago, and his family was with us. We searched in the same formation — a straight line walking together in a flat grassy area. A surveillance drone was used and a search dog. Unfortunately for the family, we didn’t find anything. We then drove five minutes up the hill to a garbage center. They didn’t allow allow us to go in, but we searched the surroundings outside of the garbage center. There was a fire burning inside the center, and all the fumes were blowing our way, but that didn’t stop us from searching. While we were searching, we received a message on the radio that somebody had found a body close by, so we drove there. At the scene there was an area where it seemed that the soil had been removed recently. It smelled strong, and somebody started removing some soil with a shovel. I saw worms and bugs and some blood there. Everybody started saying. “yeah there is somebody there.” The family that was looking for their son was there, and they asked us to start digging out the body. The crime scene team arrived, and they decided to take over the digging. A few minutes later they announced that it was not a human body — it was an animal, a sheep. Our team left and went to the next site El Morro, where the excavator was waiting for us. Miguel, Julio and Simon worked with the machine operator, removing concrete walls, wrecked cars and garbage. Miguel, Julio, Simon and Lina always looked meticulously through the debris that the machine collected to search for remains. After three hours of digging they found a body. They said that it was a woman. The search team took over the digging. That was a “positive day.”
While driving to the next site, Miguel said that there was probably more than one body in that pit. We arrived at the final site at 7 o’clock. it was too late to search as the sun was going down, so we went back to Tijuana City to pick up our belongs and drove to Mexicali City. None of the bodies found appeared to be the ones the families there were looking for. I imagined what they must be feeling — If I were waiting to see if it was someone from my family being dug out, while still holding onto the hope of finding them alive, I would be emotionally completely in pieces.
Hoy fue un día ajetreado, un día positivo, eso no significa que haya sido fácil y amigable. Un día positivo significa que encontramos un cuerpo y tal vez más. Regresamos al sitio anterior, El Morro, cerca de Rosarito, a 45 minutos de la ciudad de Tijuana. Antes de ir a El Morro (barranca utilizada como basurero) pasamos por dos sitios cercanos. En el primer sitio buscábamos a un joven de unos 20 años que desapareció hace cinco días, su familia estaba con nosotros. Hicimos la misma formación, una línea recta caminando juntos en una zona plana y cubierta de hierba. Se utilizó un dron de vigilancia y un perro de búsqueda, supongo que no fue suerte para la familia. No encontramos nada. Luego manejamos como cinco minutos colina arriba hasta un centro de basura no nos dejaron entrar, pero subimos más arriba a los alrededores del centro de basura. Había un incendio dentro del centro, todo el humo venían a nuestro lado pero eso no nos impidió seguir la búsqueda. Mientras buscábamos allá, recibimos un mensaje en la radio de que alguien había encontrado un cuerpo, cerca de donde nos encontrábamos, haya fuimos. En la escena había un área que parecía que la tierra fue removida recientemente, olía mal y cerca había cabellos largos. Con una pala alguien comenzó a remover un poco la tierra. Allí vi algunos gusanos e insectos y algo de sangre. Todos empezaron a decir que sí, “hay alguien allí”, la familia que estaba buscando a su hijo estaba llegando y nos pidieron que empezáramos a sacar el cuerpo. El equipo de peritos entró y decidieron continuar la excavación y nos fuimos. Unos minutos después anunciaron que no era un cuerpo humano, era un animal, una oveja. Nuestro equipo se dirigió al siguiente sitio El Morro, donde nos esperaba la excavadora. Miguel, Julio y Simón trabajaron con el operador de la máquina, removiendo muros de concreto, autos destrozados y basura siempre Miguel, Julio, Simón y Lina mirando meticulosamente el brazo de la máquina recogiendo y vertiendo escombros para buscar restos. Después de tres horas de excavación encontraron un cuerpo, dicen que era de una mujer al que el equipo peritos también se encargó de continuar la excavación. Ese fue un día positivo. Mientras conducíamos hacia el siguiente sitio, Miguel dijo que probablemente allí en ese pozo había más de un cuerpo. En el ultimo sitio llegamos a las 7 de la noche, era demasiado tarde para buscar sin luz solar, así que regresamos a Tijuana para recoger nuestras pertenencias y viajar hasta la ciudad de Mexicali. Ninguno de los cuerpos encontrados se parecía a los que buscaban las familias que nos acompañaban. Solo con pensar en esperar para ver si alguien de mi familia está dentro de la tierra y la idea de que hay esperanza de encontrarlos con vida, estaría emocionalmente destrozado.
